Why Choose Mechatronics? An Answer from Alumnus Kevin Lindlaan

Kevin Lindlaan is an alumnus of the mechatronics program at EWERS. After graduating from EWERS, he continued his studies in electrical power engineering and mechatronics at TalTech. Kevin successfully represented both EWERS and Estonia at several international vocational competitions.

1. Why did you choose to major in mechatronics?

Ever since I was a child, I’ve been interested in everything related to computers and information technology skills. At first, it was Legos; as I got older, it was computers and robotics; and by the time I finished high school, mechatronics was already a natural choice. Even my required research project in high school focused on the field of IT—solving math problems using robots. Mechatronics is a field that combines everything that interests me—from IT knowledge to building devices from scratch (including programming).

2. How would you describe your time studying here (what went well, what was difficult, what stood out the most)?

For me, the beginning was quite difficult. When I enrolled and started studying, many things seemed hard and confusing at first. But as I got more used to it and started delving deeper into the material, studying became easier and the subjects became clearer.

I liked that I gained a lot of practical skills and was able to work on my own projects. What stood out most to me was the course instructor, Viktor Dremljuga, who guided and motivated me to learn and grow. Whenever something was unclear, he was always there to help and explain things.

3. What did you do after you graduated?

After graduating from EWERS, I took a job in my field for a year to gain practical experience. After that, I enrolled in college. I also participated in the WorldSkills and EuroSkills vocational competitions, which gave me a lot of experience and helped me grow professionally.

4. What is your job title, or what do you do professionally today?

I am currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering and Mechatronics at TalTech, where I have chosen the mechatronics track. In addition, I work as a teaching assistant at the university in the Mechatronics and Autonomous Systems Research Group.

In the 2026/2027 school year, middle school graduates will be able to acquire broad-based knowledge in mechatronics through the industrial digital technology program. During the program, students can choose between three tracks: mechatronics, robotics, and industrial digital technology.

For those who have completed secondary education, EWERS offers a Level 5 program in mechatronics.
