Eik will graduate from EWERS this spring with a degree in carpentry. His interest in woodworking began in middle school, and his studies at EWERS only deepened that interest. Eik has also been a WERMO scholarship recipient for two years.
1. Why did I choose to study carpentry?
I first became interested in carpentry back in middle school during my technology classes—those were my absolute favorite classes. In those classes, we got to make all kinds of cool wooden objects, and that’s where my desire to create things with my own two hands really took root. For my 8th-grade research project, I built a wooden pinwheel, and for my 9th-grade final project, we worked on a team assignment where I had to build a small wooden bridge that could support all of our body weights.
Enrolling at Ewers gave me a new opportunity to learn more about wood—not just about the carpentry trade, but also how to apply that knowledge in a practical way in the school’s machine shop.
2. How would I describe my time in school?
I’m very happy with my studies! So far at school, I’ve been able to do exactly what I was hoping to do before I enrolled—I was hoping to do more woodworking, and that’s exactly what I’ve been able to do. We’ve built furniture and a bike shed for the school, and I’ve had personal projects that I’ve been able to work on in the school workshop. Our activities haven’t been limited to working behind machines in the workshop or in the arts and crafts classroom; knowledge is also an important part of a carpenter’s work: the theory of wood cutting, understanding the properties of wood, drafting, mathematics, and so on. I am grateful to my teachers and classmates; the teachers have taught me everything I need to know and be able to do, and they have supported and helped me whenever I’ve gotten stuck on something. Right now, my final months of school are approaching, along with my final project, which will give me the opportunity to put everything I’ve learned to the test, pass my vocational exam, and craft my final project piece.
3. What did I do after I graduated?
After graduating, I started working at AS Wermos. I had completed my second- and third-year internships at Wermos, which gave me enough experience to continue working there. I’m definitely interested in continuing my studies—for example, pursuing a Level 5 degree—but for now, I’ve decided to get a job and earn some money.
In the 2026/2027 academic year , middle school graduates will be able to enroll for the first time in EWERS’s wood products technology program. The curriculum is broad-based, and students can choose between two specializations during their studies: wood machining and furniture making.
