Who is a carpenter and what can they do?
A carpenter is a skilled worker who may be employed in a construction or property maintenance company, or a company specializing in the industrial manufacturing of wooden structures.
The main responsibilities of a carpenter include fabricating and assembling wooden structural elements and building components, constructing walls, intermediate floors, and roofs from wood structures, as well as insulating them. They also work on restoring and remodeling wood structures, installing roofing materials, and fitting doors, windows, stairs, and other interior and exterior elements.
How can one become a carpenter?
Prerequisite for starting: basic education
Form of study: non-stationary session study or workplace-based learning, one week per month
Duration of study: 2 years
Volume of company internship: 30 ECTS credits (approximately 780 astronomical hours)
Upon completion of the program, a level 4 construction carpenter vocational examination is taken.
What is learned?
Carpenters learn to create wooden joints, construct timber-frame walls, intermediate floors, and roofs, install openings and cladding, as well as roof coverings, renovate wooden structures, and perform construction surveying and drafting.
What comes next?
Upon completion of the program, graduates can work as carpenters on various construction sites, as machine operators in wood-processing companies, and continue their studies in wood product technology at the Võrumaa Education and Technology Center.
