CNC Lathe Operator

Form of study: Semester-Based Instruction

Prerequisites: Based on a primary education

Duration of study: 1 year

A CNC lathe operator is a specialist in the modern metalworking industry who machines metal parts using both manually operated and computer-numerically controlled (CNC) lathes. If you value precision above all else and want to see how complex mechanical engineering components are manufactured using cutting-edge technology and state-of-the-art machinery, this hands-on field is your ticket to a lucrative career.

Duration of Study: This is a shorter, compact curriculum totaling 60 ECTS credits (lasting an average of 1 year).

  • Setting Up Machine Tools: You will learn how to prepare a lathe for operation, install the necessary fixtures (clamping devices) and cutting tools, and determine the optimal cutting parameters.
  • Programming (NC code): You will learn to manually write and modify control programs for machining parts on a computer-controlled lathe, enter them into the machine, and test their operation.
  • Machining and Finishing of Parts: You will machine parts on lathes and CNC machines, remove burrs from finished parts, and use precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers) to verify compliance with strict quality requirements.
  • Reading and Sketching Drawings: You will learn to read technical drawings and diagrams, understand symbols, and sketch details.
  • Basic Skills in Metalworking: In addition to operating a lathe, you’ll learn classic metalworking techniques (cutting, filing, drilling holes, and cutting internal threads) as well as safe lifting and transport procedures (slinging).

Since this is a shorter and highly specialized program, there are no specific track options in the curriculum. However, through elective courses, you can gain additional practical computer skills or expand your skills in sheet metal fabrication (for example, using laser cutters and press brakes).

  • A prerequisite for beginning studies is having completed basic education.
  • You are precise and conscientious by nature, and you have a strong ability to concentrate and a keen eye for detail.
  • You thrive in both independent and team-based work, and you are prepared to take on routine and varied tasks in a clean, high-tech environment.
  • The program is flexible—it offers part-time (session-based) study, on-campus study, and workplace-based study.

The program concludes with a vocational exam; upon successful completion, you will receive a “CNC Metal-Cutting Machine Operator, Level 4” vocational certificate. A stable, respected, and well-paying job awaits you at modern mechanical engineering and metalworking companies.
